Kumi is the first district to be curved out of the former Teso district comprising now over six districts. It is reknown for its spirit of hard work and hospitality to visitors. Kumi district has a big cultural diversity with people of various background settled here. These include the foreign investors of Indian and Korean background as well as the indigenous Ugandan ethnic groups like Bagishu, Bagwere and Banyankole.
Kumi is blessed with a flat topography and it enjoys a modified equatorial climate with an averagely warm temperature throughout the year. We do have a number of natural tourist features in the district such as the isolated inselbergs in the sub-counties of Ngora, Nyero, Kapir and Mukongoro, the swampy lakes and the centrally located Lake Kyoga. These features are also of great economic importance to the district just as they have added to its natural beauty. There are other attractions and historical sites that you can find in this eastern located district and these include; Nyero Rock Paintings – Moru Ikara (believed to be the stone age- man settlement) and the recently discovered one at Mukongoro rock, the Tisai Islands and Lake Bisina with rare bird species like Shoe-bill stock and Fox weaver.
