Although the area was greatly afflicted by the rebellion and cattle raids by the Karimojong warriors completely destroying most of the infrasture, education in the district has greatly improved. The intervention of the government through a number of programs alongside the NGOs, many of the schools have been refurbished and are now housed in permanent buildings. The district presently has:
•    146 Government Aided Primary Schools against 5 private and 6 community schools
•    9 Government Aided Secondary Schools against 17 private schools.
•    1 Special Needs Schools.
•    2 Government aided technical schools against 1 private one
•    3 staff members in the inspectorate

Teachers

Teachers constitute 63.7 in the district work force.  The 2008 data on teachers, standing at 1598 goes slightly below the 1598 establishment figure for Kumi District given by the Ministry of Public Service for the FY 2006/2007.  Now that the pupil enrolment for FY 2008/2009 stands at 105,000 against a teaching force of 1626, Kumi district will desire an additional 346 teachers if it is to achieve the current national teacher/pupil ratio of 1:54.  Currently, the teacher pupil ratio stands at 1:66 which is slightly on the higher side.
